There's a lot to think about when buying a new vehicle, including your budget, what you can afford, what options you need, safety features and more. One of the biggest concerns -- and one which most people don't give enough consideration -- is making sure you're financially covered if something goes wrong, including so-called "Gap Insurance." Whether you're buying your first new vehicle or your fiftieth, Gap Insurance -- A.K.A. Gap Coverage -- should definitely be on your radar. The "gap" in "Gap Coverage" is actually an acronym for General Asset Protection. Simply put, Gap Coverage is insurance to cover the difference between what your vehicle is worth and... more what you still owe on the note. You see, the moment you drive a new vehicle off the lot, it is subject to what is known as depreciation, creating a sometimes sizable difference between what you paid for that vehicle and what you could immediately sell it for if you wanted to try. Depreciation is normal when purchasing a new vehicle, and shouldn't be seen as evidence that you "paid too much" or didn't get a good deal. It's just part of buying a new car and has been since the days when Henry Ford was building Model Ts. The issue is: if you are involved in an accident that destroys or "totals" your vehicle within the first year or so of making payments, the appraised value of the vehicle may actually be less than what you owe on the loan -- sometimes much less. If that is the case, when an insurance company cuts you a check for the appraised value of the vehicle that was destroyed, there can be a significant gap between what you're paid by the insurance company and what you still owe on that vehicle. For example: if you paid $35,000 for a new SUV and are involved in an accident four months later that totals that vehicle, you might only get a check that covers $26,000, even though you still owe $31,000. That $5,000 difference can be a sizeable financial burden, and can actually make it impossible to buy a vehicle to replace the one that was wrecked. That's where Gap Protection Coverage comes in. Available for purchase through the dealership or your car insurance company, gap coverage pays the difference between what you owe and what the vehicle is worth due to depreciation in the event of an accident that "totals" in the vehicle. While you might not need it if you make a large down payment, chances are you will, at least for a few months. Many lenders these days actually require buyers to purchase gap protection when buying a new vehicle just because the risk is too great otherwise. Nobody likes paying their hard-earned money for insurance coverage you might never need, but when it comes to buying a new car, gap insurance is an absolute necessity. This single-shield emblem was used on Buick vehicles from 1937 until 1960, when it was updated to three shields in red, white and blue, which symbolized both American pride and the Buick LeSabre, Invicta and Electra, which were then Buick's best-selling cars. 5) Founded on May 19, 1903, Buick Motor Company is the oldest surviving American auto brand. It's older than Ford Motor Company, which was incorporated on June 16, 1903, by a little over a month. 6) Built in very limited numbers through a partnership with F1 racing supplier McLaren, the 1987 Buick Regal GNX was a one-year-only special edition of the turbocharged Buick Grand National. This vehicle featured a turbocharged and intercooled V6 engine conservatively rated at 276 horsepower (though most experts say the actual power number was much higher) and a special "torque arm" rear end designed to produce maximum traction on takeoff. What Does Buick's Avenir Badge Mean?7) With a quarter mile time of 12.7 seconds, the 1987 Buick GNX was the fastest American production car of the 1980s. It was quicker than both the 1987 Ferrari F40 and the 1987 Porsche 930 in the quarter mile. 8) Buick Motor Company invented the first overhead valve engine in 1904, even though other manufacturers would continue to use less efficient valve-in-block "flathead" engine designs for much of the next 50 years. 9) From 1949 to 1958, all Buick cars featured either three or four-round, chrome-trimmed Buick portholes on each side of the hood. Three holes per side denoted a six-cylinder model, and four holes per side denoted an eight-cylinder. Officially known as "ventiports," the holes were adopted brand-wide by the company after Buick designer Ned Nickles (inspired by the exhaust ports on World War II fighter planes) installed four chrome-trimmed holes in the hood sides of his 1948 Buick Roadmaster convertible with lights inside to simulate flickering exhaust flames. 10) Created to mark Buick's 50th anniversary, the rare and beautiful 1953 Buick Skylark convertible was a true factory custom. It was made by slicing the body shell of a Buick Roadmaster convertible in two horizontally, removing an angled strip of metal from the entire perimeter of the car, and then welding the pieces back together -- a process known in the custom car world as "sectioning." The Y-Job was miles ahead of other cars in 1938! The world's first "dream car," the 1938 Buick Y-Job was the brainchild of GM stylist Harley Earl. Out front, the Y-Job included the first use of the iconic Buick "waterfall grille," made up of thin, perfectly-spaced vertical ribbons of chrome, and the first use of the iconic Buick "bombsight" hood ornament. Flanking the striking grille was one of the industry's first examples of retractable, hideaway headlights for a smooth and streamlined look, with wrap-around bumpers front and rear. The car lacked the running boards that had been standard equipment since the dawn of the automobile, along with recessed tail lights, flush-mounted door handles and trunk release handles. The convertible top was electrically operated, a rarity for the day, and fully retracted into a pop-up panel in the trunk for a clean look.Futuristic Features: Buick Connected Services As you can see by looking at production cars of the 1940s and early 1950s, elements of the Buick Y-Job would find their way into vehicles for the next 20 years or more. The Y-Job's design not only influenced Buick vehicles, but also vehicles by Ford, Lincoln, Dodge, Chrysler, Studebaker and many others. Seeing the excitement the car produced when displayed to the public, all other major manufacturers were soon building concept cars of their own, giving customers glimpses of the vehicles of tomorrow. As for Harley Earl, he would drive the Buick Y-Job as his personal vehicle until 1951. By then, many of its features had been incorporated into GM cars with which it shared the roads. The Y-Job was later restored by the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, Mich., which returned the car to GM in 1993. Today, it is on display with other restored icons of GM design at the General Motors Heritage Center in Detroit. In 2001, Buick paid homage to the car with another groundbreaking vehicle, the Buick Blackhawk concept car, which featured retro-futuristic styling that drew heavily on the design of the Y-Job. CABIN AIR FILTER REPLACEMENT: Most drivers know that you need to regularly change the engine air filter to help keep your engine breathing free, but what about the air you and your family are breathing on the road? Most cars today include a cabin air filter to reduce the amount of dust, mold, bugs and debris that can make its way into the vehicle while the AC or heat is on, and if you don't keep it changed, it can really cut down on how well your ventilation system works to keep you comfortable. If you want to change it yourself, Air Cabin Filters can be purchased fairly cheap at any auto parts store, and videos on how to remove and replace these filters -- which are often hidden in the ductwork behind the glove compartment -- are available for most models on Youtube. SUV REAR WIPER BLADE REPLACEMENT: Seeing where you're going through the front windshield is important enough that most drivers keep their windshield wiper blades replaced and up to snuff, but if you drive an SUV, there's another wiper blade that often gets short-shrift when it is time for replacement: the blade that keeps the rear window clear. While not as crucial to safety as keeping the windshield wipers in good shape, the rear window wiper is there for a reason, clearing the glass of rain, mud and dust that can obscure your vision while you're backing up. The rear wipers take a real beating due to grit deposited on the rear glass, so be sure to check the function of yours at least as regularly as you attend to the front wipers. TAILLIGHT FUNCTION CHECK: Be honest: do you know, for a fact, that the brake lights, signal lights and hazard flashers on your car are working right now? Probably not. The reason this is true is simple: most of us never have the opportunity to follow our own vehicle in traffic. Not only can a non-working taillight make your car unsafe on the road, with many states -- including Arkansas -- no longer requiring annual safety inspections, a burned out brake light can go unnoticed for weeks or months, potentially leading to a stop by the police and a costly ticket. While doing routine vehicle maintenance, get a friend to sit in the driver's seat and operate all the signals, flashers and running lights while you're standing behind and in front of the vehicle. If anything isn't working properly, the fix is usually fairly easy -- and much cheaper than a ticket. SPARE TIRE PRESSURE: If you've been driving awhile, you've probably been there: you come out to find your vehicle sitting on a flat. Whether you want to change it for yourself or wait for roadside assistance (or a helpful friend), there's a few things that are absolutely crucial to getting you back on the road again, and one of them is a fully inflated spare tire. The issue is that a spare tire tends to be one of those "out-of-sight-out-of-mind" items that doesn't draw much attention or inspection until you need it, and if it has been sitting awhile in its holder under the car, it could have been damaged or otherwise lost pressure, making the spare useless when you need it most. When you're doing basic maintenance, do yourself a favor and check the pressure in your spare. Chances are it will be fine. But if it isn't, you've just saved yourself the hassle of piling one headache on top of another. JONES' B-B-Q DINER 219 West Louisiana Street, Marianna The East Arkansas Delta is the cradle of great Arkansas barbecue, and the little town of Marianna is home to what might be the greatest of them all: Jones' B-B-Q Diner. A surprise winner of the James Beard Award -- normally handed out to world-renowned five-star restaurants -- Jones' B-B-Q Diner has been around since the 1920s and is about as bare bones as you can get, situated in a simple cinderblock building with a handpainted sign out front. The pork butt and sides, however? Divine, even if they are served on plain ol' white bread. Get there early, though, as they usually sell out quick. MCCLARD'S BARBECUE 505 Albert Pike Road in Hot Springs Another classic, old-line barbecue joint in a building that looks like it could be a set piece in a 1920s road movie, McClard's Barbecue is a family-owned place that has been around since 1928. There's even a fascinating story about how it came to be, with the McClard Family, who originally ran a small motel nearby, accepting the recipe for their barbecue sauce from a destitute boarder who couldn't pay his rent. Though the author of the recipe is lost to time, thankfully, McClard's is still around, dishing up some of the best barbecue in Central Arkansas with loads of their tangy, one-of-a-kind sauce. Bring cash, though, as they don't accept cards. SIMS BARBECUE 2415 Broadway Street in Little Rock When a restaurant has been around over 80 years, you know they have to be doing something right in the kitchen. Little Rock's Sims Barbecue, opened in 1936, seems to do everything right when it comes to down-home barbecue and delicious sides. A favorite of President Bill Clinton back before he had a few heart attacks and went vegetarian, Sims moved a few years back from their ramshackle building on 36th Street, but is still dishing up great stuff at affordable prices, serenaded by one of the best juke boxes in the city. One difference at Sims, other than the consistent quality of their hardwood-smoked pork and ribs, is their sauce: a yellow mustard/vinegar/brown sugar concoction that bears more resemblance to the barbecue found in South Carolina than any sauce served up in these parts. The sweet and tangy sauce is perfect, as are their soul food sides, homemade cakes and pies. NICK'S BARBECUE & CATFISH 1012 Bobby Glover Highway in Carlisle Serving up delectable barbecue and sides since 1972, Nick's Barbecue and Catfish in Carlisle recently moved to a larger restaurant space near their old location to better serve the hordes of diners coming off I-30 to sample their delicious menu. Don't fancy some of the best ribs and pulled pork in the state? That's cool. As the name implies, Nick's also serves meaty and delicious Arkansas-raised catfish and all the fixins, plus delicious onion rings, classic Arkansas cheese dip, homemade salsa and more, with scratch-made cheesecake, chocolate cakes and fried pies for dessert. Hope you don't have too far to go once you leave, because you'll leave Nick's stuffed, guaranteed. WHOLE HOG CAFE Original location at 2516 Cantrell Road in Little Rock While the original location of Little Rock's Whole Hog Cafe -- located in a bland strip mall a few doors down from an Office Depot -- may not look as cool on the outside as McClard's in Hot Springs or Jones in Marianna, one look at the hundreds of trophies and certificates from the nation's top barbecue competitions should clue you in that the barbecue is going to more than make up for the lack of ambiance. Now the flagship of a small chain, the original Whole Hog serves up truly incredible pulled pork, brisket, smoked chicken, sausage and ribs as the core of a menu where the sides are just as good, including spicy baked beans, a creamy, mayo-based potato salad, and even southern faves like creamed corn and greens. Save room for dessert, too, as their huge, fudgy chocolate brownies might be the best in the state.
