After months of waiting and a few launch delays due to the Covid-19 pandemic, GMC finally took the wraps off the all-new GMC Hummer EV all-electric supertruck on October 20 and we're here to tell you, it was well worth the wait! From the Hummer EV's look, to its incredible horsepower and torque, to its world-class range, to its stunning off-road capability, the 2021 GMC Hummer EV is going to be a game changer when it rolls onto the lot here at McLarty Daniel Buick GMC, with the first delivers scheduled for Fall 2021. We don't have room here to share all the ways the GMC Hummer EV is going to change the entire world of trucks, but let's dive into just a few of the features that make the GMC Hummer EV a groundbreaking next step in truck design. THE LOOK Though GMC has been offering teasers about... more the shape of the GMC Hummer EV for several months now, we were still unprepared for how cool this thing looks. While competitor Tesla's "Cybertruck" looks like a ridiculous stainless steel doorstop, the GMC Hummer EV is all truck, capturing the classic spirit of GMC while still delivering a design that is burly, tough and thoroughly modern. One of the design details GMC had previously released -- the light-up grille with six vertical slots and the word "HUMMER" outlined in black -- sets the tone for the whole truck, transforming the entire nose of the Hummer EV into a wide bar of lit acrylic that looks great day or night. From there, the GMC Hummer EV is all new, with a short hood, a cab-forward design, and a turret-style roofline that looks ready for fun, with three amber lights at the top of the nearly-vertical front windshield. The "Infinity Roof" of the Hummer EV features four modular. tinted-glass panels that lift off for open-air freedom and a rear window that rolls down, leaving a series of sturdy roll bars in place. Stout fender flares and angular wheel arches give the Hummer EV a great look, framing burly 35-inch all-terrain tires on 8-lug alloy wheels, with the option to upsize to 37-inch tires without any modifications. The bed, meanwhile, is a "unibody" affair, with no gap between the cab and bed. At the rear, cool LED taillights frame the tailgate with HUMMER in bold black, plus a version of GMC's groundbreaking Multi-Pro six-function tailgate. THE ENGINEERING The future is electric, and the GMC Hummer EV proves that future doesn't have to be bland, boring and slow. Promising to be a "Quiet Revolution" in trucks, the GMC Hummer EV features a range of 350-plus miles, with GMC promising that select trims of the GMC Hummer EV will be compatible with 800-volt DC fast chargers up to 350kW, which will be able to charge the GMC Hummer EV's groundbreaking Ultium battery pack up to 100 miles of driving for every 10 minutes of charging, making hours-long charging breaks during longer trips a thing of the past. The GMC Hummer EV will also feature available one-pedal operation that handles both acceleration and braking with only -- you guessed it! -- one pedal, plus a groundbreaking Regen On Demand System that utilizes steering-wheel-mounted paddles to let you harness regenerative braking that charges the battery every time you slow down, helping maximize range. When it comes to power, the GMC Hummer EV is simply astounding, offering GMC's previously-announced 1,000 horsepower -- putting it on power par with some of the world's most expensive supercars by makers like Bugatti and Lamborghini -- while also offering a mind-blowing 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque. To put that in perspective, the 6.6-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel currently offered in the 2021 GMC Sierra 3500 HD puts out 910 lb.-ft. of torque, less than a 10th of the GMC Hummer EV's output. So what can you do with all that horsepower and torque? While GMC hasn't release the GMC Hummer EV's maximum towing capacity, it's bound to be locomotive-like, plus GMC promises the GMC Hummer EV will do zero-to-60 times in "approximately three seconds." Given that the all-new, mid-engine Chevrolet Corvette C8 Stingray goes zero to 60 in 2.9 seconds, we'll be interested to see what the true figure turns out to be once they drop that "approximately." Among the other crazy-cool and futuristic features of the GMC Hummer EV: -- Super Cruise, General Motors' next-generation hands free driving system that can handle stop-and-go traffic and even automatically lane-change to pass slower drivers on compatible multi-lane freeways. -- Both front- and rear-axle steering, allowing the rear wheels to be turned up to 10 degrees in either direction, which lets the GMC Hummer EV move vertically in a "crabwalk" fashion. -- "Extract Mode," which activates the GMC Hummer EV's Adaptive Air Ride Suspension to raise the ground clearance of the GMC Hummer EV up to six inches so it can clear larger obstacles or ford deeper water. -- A revolutionary 18 on-board views through GMC's new "Ultravision" system, which features waterproof, shockproof cameras mounted all over the truck -- including in the undercarriage -- to let you see a real-time view of obstacles. The underbody cameras even include replaceable lens protectors and build in "wash" mode to free them of dust, mud and debris. OKAY, SO WHEN CAN I GET ONE? If you want to reserve the GMC Hummer EV in Northwest Arkansas, We've got good news and bad news. The good news is: reservations are open now, with GMC planning to deliver the first model -- called the Hummer EV Edition 1 -- in Fall 2021, with a starting price of $112,595. Bad news is: reservations slots for the launch model were gone within hours of GMC taking the wraps off the Hummer EV on October 20. However, GMC plans to roll out four trim levels of the GMC Hummer EV over the next three years. The GMC Hummer EV3X will be available in Fall 2022, with a starting price of $99,995 and three electric motors churning out 800 horsepower and 9,500 lb.-ft. of torque. The GMC Hummer EV2X will be available in Spring 2023, with a starting price of $89,995 and 625 hp/7,400 lb.-ft. on tap. The final model GMC has announced, the Hummer EV2, will be available in Spring 2024. Presumably a next-gen model, the EV2 will feature a starting price of $79,995, with the same 625 hp /7,400 lb.-ft.. output as the EV2X. The coronavirus pandemic has rearranged the plans for businesses big and small, and that includes even giant companies like GMC. Back in the early Spring, GMC announced that on May 20, they were going to reveal one of the most innovative vehicles in history: the GMC Hummer EV all-electric supertruck, releasing only a single image of a beautiful, almost Art Deco-inspired central grille bar and headlights. We were chomping at the bit for the big reveal in late May, but then Covid-19 changed everything, and GMC pushed back the reveal, then later pushed it back again, teasing the public periodically with tantalizing far-away videos or extreme close ups. That said, if nothing goes wrong (or more wrong that it has already, anyway) we appear to finally have a reveal date for the GMC Hummer EV:... more October 20, with GMC saying that reservations to buy the Hummer EV will be opened that day! Delivery is scheduled for 2021. We're so excited to welcome another full-size truck into the fold here at McLarty Daniel GMC, especially one that appears so poised to flip the script on what a truck can be and how clean it can run while still providing a simply incredible amount of towing. For now, read on for everything we know right now about the GMC Hummer EV, the massively-powerful, massively fast "supertruck" that's sure to blow you away! 1) IT'S NAMED, PURPOSELY, AFTER A LEGENDARY GAS-GUZZLER: GMC surely knew what they were doing when they called their first all-electric vehicle the "Hummer." As you may recall, back in 1998, GMC parent company General Motors purchased the brand name "Hummer" from AM General, who had built the Humvee armored vehicle for the military. GM proceeded to build three different versions of the Hummer over the next decade, the H1, H2 and H3. None of them were particularly good on gas, with Car and Driver testing showing the H2 got 10 mpg city and 12 highway. Rising fuel costs in the mid-2000s caused the public to turn away from gas-guzzling SUVs, and the economic downturn of 2008 led to Hummer's demise. 2) IT WILL LOOK LIKE A TRUCK: Though GMC has been understandably coy about showing off too much of the Hummer EV, what we do know is that it won't be a stainless steel doorstop like Tesla's goofy-looking, might-never-happen "Cybertruck." Though teaser videos by GMC are mostly shot from either far away or super close-up, what you can see in GMC videos and photos looks a lot like traditional truck, with a cargo box, a crew cab and a front hood, though the hood appears to be very short (understandable, given that there's no need for a large, bulky internal combustion engine up front or a radiator for that matter). 3) IT WILL HAVE REMOVABLE ROOF PANELS: Though GMC's rival Jeep has been giving customers the ability to quickly blow the doors and roof off for years, it appears that the GMC Hummer EV will be getting in on the open-air fun with removable panels that open both the front and rear seats of the crew-cab up to the sky. A sturdy-looking roll-cage, including a central, rear-seat spar between the front and back hoops, stays in place. It is hard to see in videos GMC has released, but it also looks like at least the front doors are frameless and possibly removable as well. 4) IT WILL BE POWERFUL: Though GMC has been tight-lipped on mechanical details of the Hummer EV, including what kind of electric motors and batteries it will use, one thing we do know is numbers, including horsepower. GMC promises the Hummer EV will churn out over 1,000 horsepower, which should be more than enough to quickly change the minds of anybody worrying about a weak and temperamental electric powertrain. Currently, the highest-horsepower GMC truck you can buy is the 2020 GMC Sierra 1500 or HD with the 6.2-liter V8, putting out 420 horsepower. That's several hundred ponies less than the projected output of the Hummer EV. 5) DID WE SAY "POWERFUL"? WE MEAN INCREDIBLY POWERFUL: Electric motors are well-known for their gargantuan torque output, but the amount of torque GMC engineers have managed to squeeze out of the Hummer EV is nothing short of astounding! How powerful is the GMC Hummer EV? Try 11,500 lb.-ft. of torque! For comparison, the 6.6-liter Duramax Turbo-Diesel in the 2021 GMC Sierra HD puts out 910 lb.-ft. of torque. The Hummer EV will have almost 13 Duramax Turbo-diesels-worth of grunt on demand, so the question isn't "What can you tow?" it's "What CAN'T you tow?" 6) IT WILL BE WICKED FAST, TOO: With supercar-level horsepower and the torque output of a Galactic Star Destroyer, you'd better believe that the Hummer EV is going to accelerate from a standing stop like a rocket sled. GMC has announced the Hummer EV can blast from zero to 60 miles per hour in under three seconds. At that rate, the Hummer EV should be able to hang with and possibly beat a 2021 Corvette C8 Stingray at the drag strip. 7) IT WILL BE ABLE TO "CRAB WALK": In the build up to the October reveal, GMC released one last, incredible video. In it, a crab is out for a stroll on the beach when a truck with all-terrain tires on an eight-lug alloy rims rolls up the critter, which doesn't budge. Then, before our eyes, the tires of the Hummer EV, front and rear, BOTH turn, and the truck steers diagonally to miss the crab. The message is: four-wheel steering, including the ability to drive horizontally! Not only should that make parking the Hummer EV a breeze, the wheels can turn independently of each other, it should also mean a serious reduction in the turning radius of the Hummer EV! The result was the rare 1953 Buick Roadmaster Skylark convertible. Essentially a factory custom built on the standard Roadmaster convertible chassis, each Skylark was created by slicing four inches out of the body of the Roadmaster horizontally and then welding it back together -- a custom-car trick called "sectioning." Because of this labor-intensive build technique, only 1,690 were built, with each selling for a then-astronomical $4,536. They are incredibly rare and valuable today. 1970 Buick GSX: When the muscle car wars of the late 1960s came about, Buick had been getting ready for years by developing some of the hottest early V8 engine combos in the game. One of our favorite Buick muscle cars of the era was the 1970 Buick GSX. Based on the "Gran Sport" trim of the Buick Skylark, the 1970 GSX went over the top on looks and horsepower, with a hood-mounted tachometer, bold graphics and special high-performance front and rear spoilers. Giving plenty of bite to that bark was Buick's giant 7.5-liter 455 V8, which was available in a series of performance "Stages" that upped the horsepower to an available 360 hp and an incredible 510 lb.-ft of torque. The GSX was both a street terror and a rare bird, even when new, with only 678 examples built that year, all in either Saturn Yellow or Apollo White. 1987 Buick GNX: By the early 1980s, Buick had long-since left behind its 1960's and 70's muscle car hot streak, and the performance days looked long past. After a decade and a half of building both boring luxury-barges and economical compact cars, however, Buick decided to show their stuff with the incredible Buick Grand National, which debuted in 1982, but which reached full flower with the 1984 model. Based on a blacked-out version of the Buick Regal, the Grand National was a supercar in sheep's clothing, powered by a turbocharged V6 delivering a then-respectable 200 horsepower and 300 lb.-ft. of torque. The greatest of all Buick Grand Nationals? The final-year 1987 Buick GNX. Featuring an intercooler, a special "torque arm" rear suspension, a larger Garrett T-3 turbo and other tricks, the GNX was rated (some say UNDER-rated to keep insurance rates low) at 276 horsepower and 360 lb.-ft. of torque. Faster than the Ferrari F40 and the Porsche 930 in the quarter-mile, the 1987 Buick GNX remains one of the most iconic American cars of the 1980s. Only 547 were produced. 1965 Buick Riviera: Buick had been building elegant automobiles for sixty years by the time 1963 rolled around. With the "Big Fins" era of automotive styling in the rear-view mirror, the 1960s were all about Jet Age styling, with clean, beautiful, flowing lines and big horsepower to back it up. Sculpted by GM's legendary chief designer Bill Mitchell, who also designed the iconic 1963 Corvette Stingray, the 1963 Buick Skylark was Buick's refined answer to the styling of the age, featuring flowing lines and a now-classic grille that would, in 1965, gain the Rivera's signature "clamshell" headlight covers that opened to reveal stacked quad headlights. Inside, the Riviera was as elegant as the beach that lent it a name, with a four-seat interior with a flow-through center console that ran all the way to the back window. There was plenty to be excited about under the hood, too, with up to a 7.0-liter V8 providing the blast off for one of the most celebrated designs of the early 1960s.
