BUYING VS. LEASING A VEHICLE: WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?

Buying versus leasing a new vehicle are similar but very different approaches to vehicle ownership. While buying a vehicle gives you complete control, leasing can be a great option if you don’t currently have the funds to purchase a new vehicle from a dealership. more We see a lot of confusion on the internet over these two terms, with many people thinking they mean the same thing. We’re here to help break it down for you and clear up any misconceptions you may have! Let’s look at buying versus leasing a vehicle from a dealership in terms of ownership, cost, and flexibility. OWNERSHIP One of the most significant differences between leasing and buying is ownership. When you buy a vehicle from a dealership, whether outright or through financing, you own it and can do anything you want with that vehicle. Even when you finance and make monthly payments on your vehicle, you can customize it and use it however you want. When you reach the end of your term agreements, you’ll fully own the vehicle, but in the meantime, that doesn’t prevent you from treating it like you already own it. Leasing, however, is more like borrowing a vehicle from a friend or family member rather than owning it. You choose to pay for the vehicle for a set period of time—usually two to four years—but you must return the vehicle to the dealership after your lease expires. However, if you really like the vehicle, you have the option to buy it; this is called a lease-to-own program. Although some leasees—the person the vehicle is leased to—decide not to purchase the vehicle at the end of their term, many do since dealerships often offer discounted rates for leased vehicles. RED FLAGS OF CAR SHOPPING COST Cost is another big factor to consider when choosing between leasing and buying a vehicle. Buying a vehicle involves more considerable investment and higher upfront costs. The costs can include a down payment, taxes, registration fees, and other ownership fees not included with leased vehicles. Buying a vehicle also involves higher monthly payments since you are paying off the listed price of the vehicle plus any interest added during your financing agreement. Leasing, however, gives you lower monthly payments. There are usually mileage restrictions when it comes to returning the vehicle, so be sure to check your mileage and not go over, or you could face financial penalties. Another big cost factor to consider is vehicle repairs and maintenance. Buying a vehicle requires you to make any payments for repairs or maintenance out of pocket, and while you may not have to do much the first few years, you will definitely have to make more costly repairs as the vehicle gets older. When you lease, you are renting the vehicle during the early stages of its lifecycle, meaning there is less of a chance you will have to make a costly repair. Some leasing terms also include warranties for routine services during your lease, reducing out-of-pocket costs. WE OFFER MARKET-BASED PRICING FLEXIBILITY Flexibility can mean different things to drivers. Do you want more flexibility to customize your vehicle, or do you like the freedom not to be stuck with a vehicle long-term? Buying a vehicle gives you greater flexibility to customize and mod it with aftermarket accessories like roof racks or a new exterior paint job. With a leased vehicle, you are not allowed to make major changes to its look and feel. Often, a modification not approved by a dealership will result in an immediate termination of the lease agreement or significant financial penalties. However, the flexibility to switch vehicles as often as you like is a key advantage of leasing a new vehicle. Do you love trying the latest technology or driving the newest and fastest vehicles? When you lease, you open up your options to cars, trucks, SUVs and even EVs that you might not be able to afford otherwise. If you love to be on the bleeding edge of technology, especially in the emerging EV and hybrid vehicle market, then leasing a vehicle is the right choice for your lifestyle. Three red flags blowing in the wind

THE RED FLAGS OF CAR SHOPPING

Red flags have been used throughout history to signify danger. From sailors warning of treacherous waters to firefighters signaling imminent threats, red flags have served as a universal symbol of caution. In modern times, the term has taken on a more metaphorical meaning, often referring to behaviors that hint at deeper issues or nefarious intentions. For instance, if someone is 45 minutes late to a first date without apologizing, that’s a red flag! The car-shopping process, unfortunately, can be full of red flags. There are plenty of shady sellers out there looking to take advantage of unsuspecting buyers. At McLarty Daniel Buick GMC in Bentonville, Arkansas, we want to help everyone learn to spot these red flags and avoid potential pitfalls. Keep reading to discover the most common red flags you should be aware of when shopping for your next vehicle. more Rust: The Secret Menace An important red flag to look out for when inspecting a used car is rust. Even the smallest amount of rust can spread quickly and cause significant damage to a vehicle’s structural integrity. When checking a car, be thorough — don’t just examine the body panels. Pay close attention to less obvious areas like under the wheel arches, between the door panels, and around the trunk. Questions to Ask Yourself Before Buying a Car Title Issues: What Are They Hiding? When buying a car from an independent seller or a smaller dealership, always confirm that there are no issues with the title. The title is a crucial document that proves ownership and provides essential information about the vehicle. If the seller hesitates to produce the title or offers excuses, that’s a major red flag. Additionally, you should be very cautious if the title comes from a different state or lists an incorrect VIN. Lack of Vehicle History: A Paper Trail of Problems A vehicle history report is another crucial element when purchasing a used car. This report provides valuable information about previous accidents, repairs, and ownership history. If a seller is unable or unwilling to provide this report, it’s likely because they’re hiding something. A lack of transparency regarding a vehicle’s history often points to significant past damage, whether from accidents or other issues. What’s Included on a Carfax Report Test Driving Troubles: The Proof is in the Drive Never skip the test drive when buying a car. This is your opportunity to get a feel for the vehicle and identify any potential mechanical issues. During the test drive, pay close attention to how the car handles. Delayed braking, unusual engine noises, rough suspension, or strange odors are all red flags. These issues could signal deeper mechanical problems that may be costly to fix. If anything feels off during the test drive, it’s best to walk away. Too Good to Be True: Beware of Big Bargains If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. While everyone loves a bargain, a vehicle priced significantly below market value often has hidden issues. Whether it’s mechanical problems, a salvage title, or other undisclosed issues, there’s always a reason for a drastically reduced price. Do your homework and research the average market price for similar vehicles. We Offer Market-Based Pricing Outstanding Recalls: Safety First Before committing to a purchase, check online to see if the make and model of the vehicle have any outstanding recalls. Recalls are issued for safety reasons, and if a seller hasn’t bothered to address them, it’s a sign that the vehicle hasn’t been properly maintained. Ignoring recalls could be dangerous for you and your passengers, so it’s crucial to resolve these before you buy. 6 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE BUYING A CAR

On the hunt for a new ride? If so, there are several good car questions you should ask yourself before making a decision — a vehicle is a significant investment! Whether you're browsing at McLarty Daniel Buick GMC in Bentonville or any other dealership, it's incredibly important to be well informed before you sign that dotted line. Here are six questions to ask at a car dealership: Can I afford the monthly payment? Even if you find your dream car, you won’t be happy if your payments put major stress on your finances. Experts recommend that your car payment should be no more than 10-15% of your monthly take-home pay. Before committing, consider all your other expenses and financial obligations. How much will maintenance cost? Beyond just the sticker price..... more you'll want to factor in maintenance costs. Some vehicles incur higher repair costs than others, so it's wise to research the reliability and common service issues of the car you're eyeing. Also, find out where the vehicle can be serviced — does it require maintenance from a specialized shop or dealership? Is this vehicle congruent with my lifestyle? It might seem obvious, but your vehicle should meet your specific needs. For instance, if you have a large family, a spacious SUV might be more suitable than a compact coupe! Consider factors like seating capacity, storage space, fuel efficiency, and off-road abilities to make sure the vehicle can accommodate your day-to-day life. Find Out Which Buick Model Fits Your Lifestyle What is the vehicle’s service history? This consideration is crucial, especially when buying used. Before finalizing your decision, ask about the car's maintenance records, any previous accidents, and the number of previous owners. A comprehensive understanding of the vehicle's past can help you avoid future headaches. Does this vehicle hold its value? Choosing a vehicle with strong resale value can maximize your investment and provide financial security down the road. Certain models depreciate slower than others, so it's worth researching which cars retain their value best in the market. Can I take a test drive? Finally, don't forget to schedule a test drive! At the end of the day, you should have the vehicle you want. Your new car should meet all your expectations in terms of comfort, performance, and overall driving experience. Take your time during the test drive to thoroughly evaluate the vehicle and confirm that it fits your preferences. Browse Our New Vehicles Here We hope this checklist will help you in your car shopping journey! Are You Considering a Trade? Are you considering trading in your vehicle for a newer model? Trading in a car is a great way to earn money that can be used toward the purchase of a new vehicle. McLarty Daniel – your trusted local Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, Ram, and Fiat dealership – is here to help you maximize your used vehicle trade-in value! more Whether you're a first-time trader or a seasoned car owner, this comprehensive guide will help you navigate the complexities of vehicle trade-ins and make sure you get the best possible deal. Value Your Trade-In Vehicle Understanding Vehicle Trade-in Basics Before diving into the specifics, it's important to understand the fundamentals of vehicle trade-ins. A trade-in occurs when you offer your current vehicle as partial payment toward a new or used car purchase. You can also trade-in your vehicle and pocket the proceeds rather than have it go toward another vehicle, but this is a less common option. The process of trading in your vehicle can significantly reduce the amount you need to finance or pay out of pocket for your new vehicle. Determing Your Vehicle's Trade-in Value The first step in the trade-in process is accurately assessing your vehicle's worth. McLarty Daniel recommends using multiple resources to get a comprehensive view of your car's value. Online valuation tools like Kelley Blue Book and Edmunds provide initial estimates, while McLarty Daniel's "Value Your Trade" tool offers a more personalized assessment. For the most accurate valuation, consider getting an in-person appraisal from McLarty Daniel. Remember, factors like mileage, condition, and local market demand can significantly impact your vehicle's trade-in value. Preparing Your Vehicle Trade-IN To maximize your trade-in value, it's crucial to present your vehicle in the best possible light. Start by thoroughly cleaning both the interior and exterior of your vehicle. Address small issues, like replacing worn wiper blades or fixing minor dents. Ensure all routine maintenance is up to date, including oil changes and tire rotations. Finally, all maintenance records and vehicle history reports must be gathered to demonstrate proper care. Timing Your Trade-In for Maximum Value The timing of your trade-in can significantly impact its value. Consider seasonal demand – SUVs and trucks may have higher values in winter, while convertibles are more desirable in summer – makes sense, right? It's also a good idea to trade in before new models are released to avoid depreciation; 2024 models are more appealing before 2025 models are released, for example. You can also try to stay informed about current automotive market trends that might affect your vehicle's value. WE OFFER MARKET-BASED PRICING How to trade-In a Vehicle at Mclarty Daniel At McLarty Daniel, we've streamlined the trade-in process to make it as smooth as possible! AFRICAN-AMERICAN AUTOMOTIVE PIONEERS WHO CHANGED THE WAY WE DRIVE

To celebrate Black History Month and America’s diversity, McLarty Daniel Buick GMC of Bentonville is highlighting four of America’s most iconic African American figures in automotive history. In true American fashion, these individuals paved the way for change and influenced the automotive industry as we know it today. Without these innovators catalyzing change, our technology would not be where it is today. George Washington Carver (1864-1943) The child of former slaves, Carver was born in Missouri. Fascinated with the natural world from a young age, Carver became the first African American student at Iowa State Agricultural College. From there, he went on to be a major figure in modern botany and biology for his innovative work with the peanut and numerous ways to utilize the plant. He eventually... more served as head of the Department of Agriculture at the famous Tuskegee Institute and helped resuscitate the South’s agriculture after the Great Depression. In 1942, the agricultural chemist received an invitation from Ford Motor Company to work in Dearborn, Michigan. During his time with Ford, Carver helped develop a synthetic rubber to help wartime shortages, and would later go on to create an alternative form of motor vehicle fuel made from plants called biofuel, along with more than 100 other important advances. Garrett Morgan (1877–1963) Born in Kentucky, Morgan moved to Ohio at the age of 14 looking for work. Something of a mechanical genius, he worked several different jobs, first as a handyman and then repairing sewing machines. Morgan developed superb skills and was able to open his own repair shop in 1907. With much success, Morgan earned enough to purchase his own car, a luxury at the time. During his drives, Morgan noticed that the manually operated traffic lights at some main intersections were ineffective as they switched from “Stop” to “Go” with no warning, causing dangerous "panic stops" by drivers or simply running the "stop" signal. This led to Morgan inventing an interim warning signal between "Stop" and "Go" which became today’s yellow traffic light. The signal Morgan patented was a T-shaped pole with three settings, which would later influence the more familiar red/green/yellow traffic lights of today. He later sold the rights to his invention for $40,000 to General Electric. C.R. Patterson (1833–1910) Born into slavery on a Virginia plantation in 1833, Patterson eventually made his way to Greenfield, Ohio, where he became a blacksmith. In 1873, Patterson joined forces with J.P. Lowe, a carriage maker in town, to form a profitable carriage building business. By the turn of the century, Patterson had become the sole proprietor of the business and renamed it C.R. Patterson & Sons. Seeing the boom in the automobile, Patterson and his firm began designing, and building vehicles under the name Greenfield-Patterson, including trucks, buses and passenger cars. Eventually the company employed an integrated workforce of about 50, and is considered the world’s first and only African-American owned and founded automobile company. At the height of their operation, the company listed 28 different models! They produced around 150 cars until the company stopped making vehicles to focus on vehicle repair in 1918. Wendell Scott (1921–1990) One of the pioneering African American racers, Wendell Scott was the Jackie Robinson of stock car racing! Born in Danville, Virginia, Scott learned to be an auto mechanic from his father. After serving in the Army during World War II, Scott opened his own auto shop and discovered the sport of auto racing. Since African Americans were not allowed to race in NASCAR, Scott raced in the Dixie Circuit. With his impressive skills on the track, NASCAR finally granted him a license, making him the first African American NASCAR driver in the sport's history. From there, Scott would go to win the Jacksonville 200, becoming the first African American driver to win a NASCAR race in the top division. Before his retirement, Scott competed in 495 Grand National races. To commemorate his groundbreaking achievements, Scott was posthumously inducted into the NASCAR Hall of Fame in 2015. The contributions made by these influential Americans guided the automobile industry and racing into what it is today, and shaped the American character. We at McLarty Daniel Buick GMC in Bentonville are very proud of that tradition of dedication and hard work, and make that same dedication a part of everything we do. FIVE WAYS TO REDUCE STRESS WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING

With the Coronavirus epidemic adding to a lot of peoples' stress, it can seem like the world is caving in on you these days. One of the places we can use to escape even while practicing social distancing is a nice, long drive. Ever noticed how time seems to slip away while you're out on a long drive? That's because after you've been driving for a while, you gain the ability to drive almost on "autopilot," which gives you plenty of time to think and clear your mind of troubles. Want to make the most of your driving time to help reduce stress? Then read on for McLarty Daniel Buick GMC's four tips on how to destress while you're behind the wheel. And if you're looking for great, reliable new or used cars in Springdale, Bentonville, Fayetteville, Rogers or anywhere in between, shop our big... more selection at McLarty Daniel Buick GMC today! 1) LISTEN TO SOME CLASSICAL MUSIC: While Beethoven, Bach and Wagner aren't everybody's cup of tea, if you're stressed, give them a shot. No matter what your musical tastes, studies have shown that listening to classical music while driving is a proven way to reduce stress levels. Subjects who listened to Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons," for example, saw significant reductions in their pulse, heart rate and blood pressure and decreased levels of stress hormones when compared to those who listened to other genres of music or nothing at all. Cars have great sound systems, so put those to use on a long drive by playing music that can help you de-stress. 2) DO THE STOPLIGHT STRETCH: Stress can push the levels of muscle tension in your body through the roof, without you even knowing it. Bust the stress behind the wheel with a stoplight stretch. Every time you have to sit through a stoplight, make it a habit to grip the wheel hard, and try to tense up the muscles in your body from your toes to your eyebrows. Everything that you can tense up, do so. Hold that for ten seconds, then exhale and try to let every tensed muscle release simultaneously and feel the tension drain out of you. Repeat as many times as desired before the light turns green. 3) JUST BREATHE: You've got a lot of time on your hands while you're driving, so make the most of them by practicing taking deep, cleansing breaths. One method you might try is the 5-3-5: breathe in through your mouth for a count of five, hold for three, breathe out forcefully for five seconds, then repeat. In addition to getting more oxygen to your brain and muscles, these tactics are similar to those used by people practicing meditation, and are a proven way to reduce stress. Just don't get so relaxed that you fall asleep! 4) COUNT YOUR BLESSINGS: During times like these, it's easy to get so overwhelmed with everything going wrong with the world that we don't stop to think about all the things that are going right. With that in mind, take some time during a long drive to literally count your blessings. Start with: What are ten things that I should appreciate in my life? Maybe move on to: Who are ten people who I am glad are in my life? Or: What are ten qualities about myself that make me stronger and more resilient? Put your mind on positive things, and you'll be surprised how quickly your outlook on life can improve. 5) BLOW OFF SOME STEAM: If you're alone in your car out in the countryside, that's a great time to take the opportunity to release some stress. Feeling anxious or stressed? Let it out in whatever way seems best for you and which can be done safely. Maybe that's singing along with the radio at the top of your voice, or maybe that's a long, cathartic scream. Maybe what works for you is to let loose a string of words that aren't fit for print here at the politician of your choice, or a long conversation with a loved one who is no longer with us. Whatever the case, blowing off steam by yourself is much better than blowing your stack at the people you love. And no matter how goofy it might seem, if you're alone, who is going to know? Give it a try the next time you're driving by yourself. You'd be surprised at how well it works. Hopefully, one of these methods will work for you to reduce stress while you're behind the wheel. McLarty Daniel Buick GMC of Bentonville wishes you all the best during this time, and has your back. FOUR GREAT AUTOMOTIVE WEBSITES TO BROWSE WHILE YOU'RE STUCK AT HOME

If you're like a lot of folks, you're probably on lockdown at home this month, waiting out the Covid-19 virus to try and help protect our health care system from overloading as well as older folks and those with compromised immune systems. Because of that, a lot of Americans have some time to spare, and McLarty Daniel Buick GMC is here to help fill those long, housebound hours with our suggestions for great car-related websites to check out while you're stuck at home. From funny to high performance, news to the completely silly, there's a little something here for everyone. JALOPNIK jalopnik.com One of the most up-to-date and fun car-related websites on the internet, Jalopnik has a little something for everyone, from new vehicle reviews, auto industry news, rare "barn find" vehicles... more that have emerged after years in storage, four-wheeling stories, drag racing and pretty much everything in between. One of the best things about Jalopnik is their irreverent style, which means even when they're talking about the sometimes dry world of new car and new automotive feature rollouts, they always do so in ways that are often hilariously funny. Highly recommended. THE PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM petersen.com Built from the fortunes of the Peterson Automotive Publishing empire, which spawned such iconic publications as Hot Rod and Car Craft Magazines, Los Angeles' Petersen Automotive Museum is a treasure house of all things cars, with millions of dollars worth of rare, vintage and restored cars on display, from compacts to Ferraris to priceless customs like the famous Hirohata Mercury by customizer George Barris. If you can't make it out to California for a tour, their website is the next best thing, with loads of beautiful photos of the cars in their collection, with informative descriptions of most. From their homepage, hit the button for "Free Education Activities" and enter this automotive wonderland. THE GENERAL MOTORS HERITAGE CENTER gmheritagecenter.com Another museum with a knockout collection, the General Motors Heritage Center near Detroit is usually closed to everyone except VIPs on pre-arranged tours, but their website is open to everybody and it is absolutely stunning, especially for fans of Chevy, Buick, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac cars, trucks and SUVs. The collection is as good as you might imagine, packed with stock from GM's personal collection, and features both low mileage "survivor" production vehicles and transport-truckloads of one-off concept cars, including such incredible vehicles as vintage mid-engine Corvettes, prototypes and even the famous Buick "Y-Job," considered the very first concept car in automotive history. In addition, the Archive section of the website includes vintage ads, and historical pieces of the development of landmark GM vehicles. It's a site any gearhead can get lost in for hours. THE BLOCK theblock.com If you're one of those folks with gasoline in your veins, The Block is the website for you, especially if you ever loved a vehicle with the famous Chevy Bowtie emblem on the grille. The official blog of Chevrolet's Performance Division, The Block is updated frequently and it's a smorgasbord for car lovers, with news and features about oval track, Formula 1, drag racing and road racing, plus features on truly incredible custom and high-performance vehicles, plus the latest and greatest new performance parts from Chevrolet Performance. One recent feature, for example, focused on a 1959 Chevrolet pickup that has been restored to factory-fresh appearance on the outside, right down to two-tone paint and whitewalls, but with a surprise under the hood: an LS3 crate motor packing 430 horsepower. That's just a sample of the stuff waiting for you at The Block. Any one of these websites is likely good for several hours of browsing while you're stuck inside. Another website you can get lost in: the website of McLarty Daniel Buick GMC! We've got a full selection of the latest quality Buick and GMC vehicles, plus one of the best selections of used cars in Northwest Arkansas. Gap Coverage

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT GAP COVERAGE | MCLARTY DANIEL BUICK GMC

There's a lot to think about when buying a new vehicle, including your budget, what you can afford, what options you need, safety features and more. One of the biggest concerns -- and one which most people don't give enough consideration -- is making sure you're financially covered if something goes wrong, including so-called "Gap Insurance." Whether you're buying your first new vehicle or your fiftieth, Gap Insurance -- A.K.A. Gap Coverage -- should definitely be on your radar. McLarty Daniel Buick GMC is here to help you understand this crucial financial protection. What is Gap Coverage and how does it work? The "gap" in "Gap Coverage" is actually an acronym for General Asset Protection. Simply put, Gap Coverage is insurance to cover the difference between what your vehicle is worth and... more what you still owe on the note. You see, the moment you drive a new vehicle off the lot, it is subject to what is known as depreciation, creating a sometimes sizable difference between what you paid for that vehicle and what you could immediately sell it for if you wanted to try. Depreciation is normal when purchasing a new vehicle, and shouldn't be seen as evidence that you "paid too much" or didn't get a good deal. It's just part of buying a new car and has been since the days when Henry Ford was building Model Ts. The issue is: if you are involved in an accident that destroys or "totals" your vehicle within the first year or so of making payments, the appraised value of the vehicle may actually be less than what you owe on the loan -- sometimes much less. If that is the case, when an insurance company cuts you a check for the appraised value of the vehicle that was destroyed, there can be a significant gap between what you're paid by the insurance company and what you still owe on that vehicle. For example: if you paid $35,000 for a new SUV and are involved in an accident four months later that totals that vehicle, you might only get a check that covers $26,000, even though you still owe $31,000. That $5,000 difference can be a sizeable financial burden, and can actually make it impossible to buy a vehicle to replace the one that was wrecked. That's where Gap Protection Coverage comes in. Available for purchase through the dealership or your car insurance company, gap coverage pays the difference between what you owe and what the vehicle is worth due to depreciation in the event of an accident that "totals" in the vehicle. While you might not need it if you make a large down payment, chances are you will, at least for a few months. Many lenders these days actually require buyers to purchase gap protection when buying a new vehicle just because the risk is too great otherwise. Nobody likes paying their hard-earned money for insurance coverage you might never need, but when it comes to buying a new car, gap insurance is an absolute necessity. Not only will it give you peace-of-mind while driving your new vehicle, it can save you and your family from having a vehicle accident compounded with a resulting financial calamity that could leave you taking the bus.
