Late last month, General Motors announced its plans to be carbon-neutral by 2040, along with a plan to phase out all light-duty gas and diesel vehicles in favor of an all-electric lineup by 2035. To advance its zero-emission and all-electric-vehicle objective, GM is focusing on priorities to make this happen. So far, it’s been a great start in its endeavor with the development of its new Ultium battery and platform.
THREE PRIORITIES: Gasoline and diesel vehicles are such a part of American society that it’s hard to imagine driving without them. So how is GM readying itself to change this infrastructure and deliver reliable vehicle horsepower? GM is taking a step-by-step approach to this and recognizes the first step is to make electric vehicles efficient, while giving the customer what…
the same quality, reliable powertrains they expect from quality GM vehicles. So one priority is to develop a battery that charges fast, delivers power efficiently and can go the distance. Also, GM understands that one way to make all-electric vehicles attractive is to design EVs for every person and every price point. Therefore GM plans to bring 30 new EVs to market globally by 2025. Last but not least is making it easy and convenient to charge up an EV. GM is joining with EVgo to increase the size of the nation’s largest public fast-charging network by adding more than 2,700 new fast chargers and making them easily accessible by the end of 2025.
ELECTRIC HEART: At the heart of the movement toward a zero-emission future is GM’s new innovative Ultima battery. These pouch batteries are configured to have a high content of nickel while minimizing the use of rarer cobalt, which results in less wiring and hardware than typical cylindrical batteries. Energy options range from 50 to 200 kWh. The overall powertrain structure envisioned by GM will consist of a family of interchangeable drive units, electric motors, and a single-speed transmission. Into off-road performance? All-wheel-drive propulsion combinations are included in the plan. The platform is designed to give optimal battery storage space along with a layout that will be utilized for EVs of all shapes and sizes.
