If you’re a fan of GMC trucks and SUVs, there’s a good chance you’ve spent some time wishing you owned a 1991-92 GMC Syclone. GMC’s all-wheel drive muscle truck was based on the Sonoma, GMC’s version of the small Chevrolet S-10. Featuring a 4.3-liter turbocharged V6 putting power to the ground through all four wheels, the Syclone is one of the all-time great performance vehicles of the 1990s, with a zero-to-60 time of just 4.3 seconds. Back in 1991, a factory Syclone famously outran a new Ferrari 348 during testing by Motor Trend Magazine — the European supercar cost four times as much as the little GMC — cementing the Syclone’s place in performance history.
Learn More About the OG 1991 GMC Syclone…
While the original, low-production Syclones are coveted today by collectors, now’s your chance to own an all-new GMC Syclone! Specialty Vehicle Engineering, the company that built the 1,000-horsepower Yenko Corvette and Yenko Camaro, has announced they’re building an all-new GMC Syclone based on the 2019 GMC Canyon!
Though not a project by GMC (cross your fingers that GMC gets the hint!), the new Syclone still features a V6 — specifically, a 3.6-liter six-holer. But this time, forced injection will be provided by a supercharger instead of a turbo, for a stout 455 horsepower! To handle all those huffed ponies, Specialty Vehicle Engineering will also upgrade the Canyon with bigger brakes, upgraded (and slightly lowered) suspension, a freer-breathing exhaust, anti-roll bars at the front and rear, and more.
Take Advantage of Market-Based Pricing at McLarty Daniel
The GMC Canyon Syclone hybrid will all be painted in semi-gloss black with 20-inch five-spoke wheels. Thanks to the fact that General Motors failed to renew the trademark on the classic red Syclone badging, the new Syclones by Specialty Vehicle Engineering will feature Syclone badges on the doors, tailgate and engine cover — just like the 1990s originals. Production will be limited to 100 examples, with prices starting at $39,995. This is well over the cost of a new 2019 GMC Canyon, which has a starting price of $22,200.
Whether you want to leave your 2019 GMC Canyon stock, dress it up with aftermarket parts, or let Specialty Vehicle Engineering turn it into a fire-breathing Syclone 2.0, you’ve gotta admit: this is one great-looking truck!
