GMC is one of the longest-running brands in the General Motors collection and has been in the truck manufacturing business for over a century. From tough, durable work trucks to sophisticated and roomy SUVs, GMC has supplied America with versatile and sensational vehicles. For all the GMC truck enthusiasts, we at McLarty Daniel Buick GMC in Bentonville, AR would like to share some quick fun facts that illustrate GMC’s industrial history and heritage, which we are proud to be a part of.
1. GMC, as we know it today, was the merging of two companies: Rapid Motor Vehicle Co. and Reliance Motor Co. The former built delivery trucks, while the latter company built both cars and trucks.
2. By 1912, GMC had already manufactured more than 20,000 vehicles which all bore the “GMC Trucks” logo. The company dropped “Trucks” and formally became GMC in 1913.
2. GMC built some of the world’s earliest electric vehicles from 1912-1917.
These trucks had single-digit model names, each denoting load capacity, from one-half ton to 12 tons.
3. At the start of the 1930s, GMC began redesigning its trucks by modifying the engine location. The development of an advanced diesel engine led the company to come up with its own production line.
4. GMC entered the Middle East market in the mid-1930s, with 4×4 and 6×6 vehicles that were specifically developed for desert use.
5. In 1937, GMC introduced its first sport utility vehicle, the GMC Suburban, which is known as the Yukon XL. It was followed by the Sierra in 1962, the brand’s first full-size personal-use pickup, and the GMC Jimmy in 1970.
6. During World War II, GMC manufactured approximately 584,000 military vehicles, including the CCKW-353 “Deuce-and-a-half” and the amphibious DUKW. Known as the “Duck,” the latter is a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of the two-and-half-ton CCKW trucks.
Today, GMC offers outstanding pickup trucks like the 2021 GMC Sierra 1500 and SUVs such as the 2021 Terrain that are the most reliable and powerful vehicles on the market.
