1. General Motors was founded by carriage maker William C. Durant on September 16, 1908 with just $2,000 in capital. His company, Durant-Dort Carriage Co., was based in…

Michigan. At that time, his company was the largest carriage maker in the world. 

2. General Motors accomplished many important firsts. These include the first vehicle air conditioning system, the first fully automatic transmission, the first to install turn signals which are now one of the standard parts of a vehicle, and the first mechanical heat pump. Plus, they were the first car maker to reach $1 billion in sales, in 1955.

3. General Motors is well-known for acquiring other car brands. Over the decades, they have bought and sold many car companies. Currently, some of the car brands that are part of the General Motors family are Buick, Chevrolet, Wuling, GMC, Cadillac, and Holden. The car brands formerly owned by General Motors include Pontiac, Oakland, Hummer, Daewoo, Saab, Saturn, and McLaughlin.

4. GM is responsible for creating the Lunar Roving Vehicle, aka the Moon Buggy, which was successfully used during the Apollo 15 mission in 1971 to explore lunar geology. It was the fourth mission to land humans on the Moon. 

5. General Motors named Mary Barra as CEO in January 2014, making her the first woman to be appointed in charge of a major car-maker. In 2017 Barra was ranked number one in Fortune’s Most Powerful Women and Number 5 on Forbes World’s 100 Most Powerful Women List in the same year.
