If you’re like a lot of folks, you’re probably on lockdown at home this month, waiting out the Covid-19 virus to try and help protect our health care system from overloading as well as older folks and those with compromised immune systems. Because of that, a lot of Americans have some time to spare, and McLarty Daniel Buick GMC is here to help fill those long, housebound hours with our suggestions for great car-related websites to check out while you’re stuck at home. From funny to high performance, news to the completely silly, there’s a little something here for everyone.
JALOPNIK
One of the most up-to-date and fun car-related websites on the internet, Jalopnik has a little something for everyone, from new vehicle reviews, auto industry news, rare “barn find” vehicles…
that have emerged after years in storage, four-wheeling stories, drag racing and pretty much everything in between. One of the best things about Jalopnik is their irreverent style, which means even when they’re talking about the sometimes dry world of new car and new automotive feature rollouts, they always do so in ways that are often hilariously funny. Highly recommended.
THE PETERSEN AUTOMOTIVE MUSEUM
Built from the fortunes of the Peterson Automotive Publishing empire, which spawned such iconic publications as Hot Rod and Car Craft Magazines, Los Angeles’ Petersen Automotive Museum is a treasure house of all things cars, with millions of dollars worth of rare, vintage and restored cars on display, from compacts to Ferraris to priceless customs like the famous Hirohata Mercury by customizer George Barris. If you can’t make it out to California for a tour, their website is the next best thing, with loads of beautiful photos of the cars in their collection, with informative descriptions of most. From their homepage, hit the button for “Free Education Activities” and enter this automotive wonderland.
THE GENERAL MOTORS HERITAGE CENTER
Another museum with a knockout collection, the General Motors Heritage Center near Detroit is usually closed to everyone except VIPs on pre-arranged tours, but their website is open to everybody and it is absolutely stunning, especially for fans of Chevy, Buick, GMC, Oldsmobile and Pontiac cars, trucks and SUVs. The collection is as good as you might imagine, packed with stock from GM’s personal collection, and features both low mileage “survivor” production vehicles and transport-truckloads of one-off concept cars, including such incredible vehicles as vintage mid-engine Corvettes, prototypes and even the famous Buick “Y-Job,” considered the very first concept car in automotive history. In addition, the Archive section of the website includes vintage ads, and historical pieces of the development of landmark GM vehicles. It’s a site any gearhead can get lost in for hours.
THE BLOCK
If you’re one of those folks with gasoline in your veins, The Block is the website for you, especially if you ever loved a vehicle with the famous Chevy Bowtie emblem on the grille. The official blog of Chevrolet’s Performance Division, The Block is updated frequently and it’s a smorgasbord for car lovers, with news and features about oval track, Formula 1, drag racing and road racing, plus features on truly incredible custom and high-performance vehicles, plus the latest and greatest new performance parts from Chevrolet Performance. One recent feature, for example, focused on a 1959 Chevrolet pickup that has been restored to factory-fresh appearance on the outside, right down to two-tone paint and whitewalls, but with a surprise under the hood: an LS3 crate motor packing 430 horsepower. That’s just a sample of the stuff waiting for you at The Block.
Any one of these websites is likely good for several hours of browsing while you’re stuck inside. Another website you can get lost in: the website of McLarty Daniel Buick GMC!
