The Pig TrailFayetteville to OzarkThough Interstate 49 has long since rendered the Pig Trail more of a tourist attraction than a the popular route to Fayetteville it once was, the legendary two-laner is great these days when you want to slow down and bask in the splendor of the Ozarks, with the added bonus that the Interstate has cut way, way down on Pig Trail traffic heading north to Fayetteville. Start in Fayetteville and head south on Highway 16 at Brashears, then follow Highway 23 down to Ozark.
Boston Mountains Scenic LoopFayetteville to AlmaSpeaking of I-49, the interstate — built through some of the most rugged and beautiful terrain in the United States — has plenty of splendor in its own right, which makes it a worthy addition to the Boston Mountains Scenic Loop between Fayetteville and Alma. In addition to 40 miles of I-49, the Loop includes 40 miles of beautiful U.S. Highway 71, for a two-lane palate cleanser after cruising the interstate. There’s numerous attractions along the loop, including Devil’s Den State Park, the state’s only highway tunnel and Lake Fort Smith State Park.
Highway 7Lead Hill to El DoradoArkansas’s original scenic byway, Highway 7 was once a main artery for those looking to get from North Arkansas to South Arkansas. Though the route has since been eclipsed by multi-lane highways and freeways, you can still follow it all the way if you want, passing through beautiful areas of the state including Jasper, the Ozark National Forest, the Ouachita National Forest, and Hot Springs. Highway 7 is impossible to beat for leaf peeping in the fall, when the variety of trees and greenery along the way makes for an explosion of colors that changes as you move from the deciduous forests of the north to the piney woods of the south.
Mount Magazine Scenic BywayHavana to Mount Magazine State ParkWhen it comes to maximizing the full effect of fall’s glorious colors, you really can’t beat getting high. We mean, of course, getting literally high on a mountaintop at Mount Magazine State Park near Paris, home to the tallest peak in the state. Getting there from North Arkansas is a good bit of the fun for color chasers, and the Mount Magazine Scenic Byway, which follows Arkansas Highway 309 for 45 miles from Havana to Mount Magazine, is a great way to get there, climbing over 2,300 feet before arriving at one of the great scenic views in the whole state. When the colors are on in the fall, it’s magnificent. Book a stay at the gorgeous Lodge on Mount Magazine with a view of the valley far below to extend the ooohhhs and ahhhhhs.
