Whether you’re a new driver or a veteran driver, wouldn’t it be nice to have an impartial coach to help make sure you’re being as safe as you can be on the highway? Whether it’s because of carelessness or just being “on autopilot,” we can all fall into habits that might lead to unsafe driving.
With a new addition to Buick’s myBuick cell phone app, Buick makes the idea of that impartial driving coach riding shotgun a reality, allowing you to take a real-time peek into how you’re doing on the road. Called Buick Smart Driver, the voluntary app can be activated to monitor a number of metrics in cooperation with Buick’s in-dash information screen and your Buick’s onboard speed, braking and drivetrain monitoring systems, delivering…
a report right to your cell phone, helping you monitor driving behaviors, improve fuel economy, or just become a safer and more conscious driver. The system can also be used by a loved one to monitor the driving habits of new or older drivers, who may have difficulty behind the wheel.
“In today’s world, people are using health, finance and even sleep monitoring apps to help improve their lifestyle and well-being,” said Steve Samolinski, senior manager of Buick Connected Services. “Bringing Buick Smart Driver services into the myBuick app can help our customers become more aware of their driving behaviors and improve as necessary.”
Once they activate Buick’s Smart Driver app, Buick owners can monitor driving events by the day, week or month, including:
Hard braking events
Hard acceleration events
High-speed driving as a percentage of total miles driven
Late-night driving as a percentage of total miles driven
Total mileage
Average fuel economy
Average miles-per-hour over a set timeframe
In addition, the app will award the driver an overall Smart Driver score, with tips on how you can improve your score — and your safety behind the wheel. As part of the service, drivers can enroll in the Insurance Discounts Eligibility portion of the app, which allows them to qualify for discounts on their rates without revealing personal data to insurance companies.
Buick launched Smart Driver as a web-only site in May 2016. Since then, over 200,000 Buick owners have enrolled, with an average of 700,000 trips reported daily. Almost 100,000 Buick owners have enrolled in the Insurance Discounts Eligibility program.
It’s one more way that Buick’s relentless pursuit of useful, purposeful technology is making their vehicles safer and more efficient on the road.
